United Nations officials investigating a possible genocide in Myanmar have said Facebook has been a source of propaganda against the minority in a country where it has become a near-ubiquitous communications tool as the economy opens up. Myanmar's nationalist monks and activists, who have emerged as a political force in recent years, have been sharing violent and angry rhetoric on Facebook targeting the minority, seen by many in the Buddhist-majority country as illegal immigrants. Facebook Shared User Data With Select Companies Beyond Previously Announced Date

Image
Facebook shared personal information culled from its users' profiles with other companies after the date when executives have said the social network prevented third-party developers from gaining access to the data, the company confirmed Friday. The records included information about the friends of  Facebook  users, including phone numbers and breakdowns analysing the degrees of separation between people on the social networks, according to a Wall Street Journal report. In its confirmation of the story, Facebook acknowledged the information was given to a "small number" of companies including RBC Capital Markets and Nissan Motor Co., advertisers and other business partners. The companies had access to the data during a stretch of time in 2015 after Facebook had locked out most developers who build apps that work on its social network. Facebook gave select "whitelisted" companies extensions before they were also blocked from getting its users' per...

NASA Extends Juno's Jupiter Mission Until July 2021

Image
With  NASA's  Juno spacecraft needing more time to gather the mission's required data, the US space agency has decided to extend its science operations until July 2021, making way for the probe to spend three more years in orbit around Jupiter. Juno  is in 53-day orbits rather than 14-day orbits as initially planned because of a concern about valves on the spacecraft's fuel system.  This longer orbit means that it will take more time to collect the needed science data. Scientists hope that the extension of the spacecraft's operations will enable the mission to achieve its primary science objectives.  The end of prime operations is now expected in July 2021, with data analysis and mission close-out activities continuing into 2022, NASA said in a statement this week. An approval for the extension of the mission was expected as an independent panel of experts confirmed in April that Juno is on track to achieve its science objectives and is already retur...

Researchers Develop AI to Identify, Describe Wild Animal

Image
Researchers have developed an  artificial intelligence (AI) system that can automatically identify, count and describe wild animals using photographs collected by "camera traps", also called motion-sensor cameras. The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), showed that the AI system could automate animal identification for up to 99.3 percent of images at an accuracy rate of 96.6 percent which was similar to the rate achieved by crowdsourced teams of human volunteers. "This technology lets us accurately, unobtrusively and inexpensively collect wildlife data, which could help catalyse the transformation of many fields of ecology, wildlife biology, zoology, conservation biology and animal behaviour into 'big data' sciences," said Jeff Clune, Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming in the US and senior author of the paper. "This will dramatically improve our ability to both study and cons...
